He was born in New York in 1957.  Oursler completed a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts at the California Institute for the Arts, Valencia, California in 1979.

His art covers a range of mediums working with video, sculpture, installation, performance and painting.  He has gained international attention with controversial exhibitions staged around the world in museums and galleries.  For over ten years these shows have combined sculpture, video and performance with a unique primacy that rivets viewers with irony and pathos. The artist's research into the history of moving images, spirit images, psychological disorders and cases of multiple personality have provided inspiration for the scripted mutterings, screams and twitches that he and his actors record on video.  Recent large installations have drawn from youth culture, and wireless communication.
