Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How Listing Services work

Posting your upcoming fine art auctions on askART helps you connect your auction to the art world. We are a fine art marketplace and research database covering over 350,000 artists from around the world and have 450,000 “unique” visitors per month, which doesn’t include all of our subscribers. Our database is used by auction houses, collectors, dealers, librarians, curators, educators, appraisers, museums, artists, art aficionados and students, giving your information a wide audience of potential buyers as well as consignors. Let us help you get your upcoming auction in front of them.

Our site is all about art auction records!

We are happy to list your fine art auction lots and results on askART which includes creating a listing for your company in our Directory of Auction Houses with your auction details.

Customers interested in finding upcoming works by their favorite artists can also find your lots listed on the Upcoming at Auction search page.

Searching for upcoming lots on individual artist pages is probably the top way that users browse new auction records.

Many users subscribe to askART alerts to receive emails notifying them of upcoming artist auctions.

Auction lots are also listed by Auction House. Many users view all the lots in a particular auction by browsing them together in sequence.

Please keep in mind, consignors take note and appreciate when their lots are posted on askART. Your lots are forever linked to Artist records, which in turn creates a great marketing tool to drive future sales and consignments.

First, we ask that you send us the information about your upcoming auction about two weeks prior to the auction. Our staff will then enter all qualifying fine art lots on our site and arrange payment.

As soon as your auction goes live on askART alerts will be sent out to interested clients and potential customers. askART was the first one to launch the artist alerts feature over 15 years ago, so we have a huge database of opt-in alert subscribers.

Our minimum fee for this service is $50, which covers the posting of 10 auction lots. Additional lots are assessed at $5 per lot up to a maximum amount of $350. In other words, you never pay more than $350 per auction, even if the lot count goes above 70.

We require that you submit all qualifying fine art lots for each auction. Once the auction is complete you will submit the results to us within a week for posting.

Please send your data at least ten days before the auction so that we have time to post it and our mutual customers have time to contact you for bids. We will register your house with askART and create a listing for your company in our Auction House Directory.

We’d like the following information in an Excel spreadsheet or tab delimited file for American and international fine art lots:

  • Auction Start Date
  • Auction End Date
  • Lot Number
  • Artist First Name
  • Artist Middle Name
  • Artist Last Name
  • Artist Birth Year
  • Artist Death Year
  • Low Estimate
  • High Estimate
  • Title of the painting or sculpture
  • Signature (e.g., signed lower right)
  • Height
  • Width
  • Depth
  • Medium
  • Subject
  • Year artwork was created
  • Edition (for sculptures)
  • Provenance
  • Exhibited
  • Literature
  • Condition
  • Lot Notes
Please leave blank any information that you may not have about the lot (e.g., Artist Death Year).

Images: Please submit images by ftp or zipped in an email. This can be arranged with our account managers. The corresponding lot number should be in the title of each image. We support multiple images for each auction lot.

Post-Auction Results: Please send prices in an Excel spreadsheet to [email protected] (by lot number). We require the prices within a week of the auction event.

If the formats abover are not possible, we will make other arrangements. (If you only have a few lots you could just email the lot data and images to [email protected].)

askART lists paintings, drawings and sculpture in our database. We do not list prints (lithographs, etchings, woodcuts etc) or photographs.

If an artist is not yet in the database they will be added as long as the auction estimates for their artwork are at least $300-$500. All appropriate fine art lots in the auction should be submitted to askART for listing and all prices should be reported as well.

We only remove lots that have been withdrawn prior to the auction event. We do not remove lots at the request of buyers, consignors or if the lot did not sell.

Please email us if any addendum changes are made to the auction catalog.

askART owns a portion of our success in selling art over the last two decades+, and I see it as part of our success in the future.

The fact that my askART ads appear in the first 5 Google results is excellent.

I must compliment askART for listing our Gallery(s) and featuring our two annual auctions. It is also our #1 source of information.
