Guan Shanyue, formerly known as Ze Pei, was a Chinese painter born in Yangjiang, Guangdong. He was a student of Gao Jianfu, the founder of the "Lingnan School of Painting". After 1948, he served as a professor of Guangzhou Art College and director of the Chinese Painting Department. After the founding of New China, Guan Shanyue successively served as a professor and deputy director of the Fine Arts Department of the South China Academy of Literature and Art. Later, he served as professor and dean of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, dean of Chinese Painting Department, president of Guangdong Art School, dean and honorary dean of Guangdong Painting Academy, vice-chairman of Guangdong Artists Association, vice-chairman of Guangdong Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and executive director of China Artists Association. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1956 and was a member of the third to the eighth National People's Congress.
