Robert Hatton Monks, painter was born in Boston, Mass., in 1856. His father, an immigrant from Ireland, had settled there in 1830. His mother, the former Delia Smith Hatton, in her youth in Bangor, Maine, had painted still lifes and street scenes. In 1877, at twenty-one, Monks began studying drawing and painting with German-born and Belgian-educated Emil Otto Grundmann and anatomy with sculptor and painter William Rimmer at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In 1881, he went to Paris, where he studied with William Adolphe Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury at the Academie Julian. Upon arriving in Paris, instead of painting in the academic tradition of his teachers, he did plein-air subjects, like the Impressionists.

Because of ill health Monks returned to the United States; by 1891 he had settled in Waltham, Massachusetts. A number of his French landscapes painted while abroad were shown in Boston in 1890, along with works by Edward H.
