Harold Sterner was active/lived in Massachusetts and New York. He is known for architecture, interior design, painting and camouflage.

Harold Sterner was the son of American painter and illustrator Albert Edward Sterner, and prominent art gallery director Marie Walther Sterner. He was born in New York in 1895. He earned a degree in architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1917. In subsequent years, he worked for established architectural firms until he began his own company in 1932.

During World War I, he served in the US Navy as an Aid for Information in the Camouflage Department. He was assigned to the 3rd Naval District, during which his duty was to “record types of camouflage on vessels entering New York Harbor, sending drawings to Washington to be checked with original designs.” Other artists who had the same assignment were Thomas Hart Benton, Louis Bouché, and Sarah Carles (sister of Arthur B.
