An Inuit (Eskimo) sculptor and carver, Ennutsiak (2) was born in the Nunavik region of northern, Quebec and died in Iqaluit, Nunavut, on Baffin Island. His mediums included stone, ivory, bone, wood and mixed mediums. His subjects included figures and animals; however he was especially well-known for his depictions of Inuit genre* - nomadic life, family activities, hunting, fishing, etc. His style is described as Primitive Art* or Inuit Art. Ennutsiak's carvings have been included in exhibitions at the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa (1963); the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Manitoba (1967, 1973, 1976, 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1983); the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Quebec (1973); the McMichael Canadian Collection, Kleinburg, Ontario (1983); the Canadian Museum of Civilization, Gatineau, Quebec (1990); and the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Ontario (1994).
