When is a city scene more than cars, crowds and buildings? Artist David Kapp explains:

David Kapp’s images would be familiar to anyone who’s ever lived in a big city. They’re full of anonymous cars, crowds and skyscrapers.

They’re often seen from above, becoming more shapes, colors and patterns than anything you could pin a name to.

If you can’t figure out what you’re looking at immediately, that’s part of his plan.

“There’s a gap between recognition and not knowing what it is that is the experience of the painting,” he said. “You’re experiencing it in real time.”

The artist talked about his work recently at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens in West Palm Beach, where “David Kapp: Crossing the Grid” is on display. The exhibition features paintings, collages and prints spanning 1982 to 2018.
