Colin Melbourne was a British artist born in Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire. He studied at Burslem School of Art and later at the Royal College of Art. Before attending the Royal College of Art, he worked for Wedgwood. He later taught at Stoke on Trent College of Art and North Staffordshire Polytechnic, where he was the Head of the Art and Design Faculty. He also worked for various potteries. Melbourne was known for his work in pottery and ceramics
