Stefan Johansson lived from 1876 to 1955. He was the original watercolor painter in Värmland, solitären of his generation and the artist who developed a his own realism. Johansson was associated with early portraits and with images of his mother, whom he called his most patient model. He was not a fast painter, both one and several years could pass before a portrait was considered finished. His oeuvre was dominated by reality studies and realism became his hallmark. In addition to portraits and landscapes he painted light studies. The fascination with the burning candle gatlyktans developed over the years of his major life theme: light as the carrier of the existential dimensions. In one of his aphorisms he wrote "The painting is to be a sounding of the eye, its highest expression is the mystery of light". The paintings with light, whether live or electrically, are Stefan Johansson's most important images.
