Andrzej S. Kowalski was born in 1930 in Sosnowiec. He became a professor of the Krakow branch of the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice. In 1955, he graduated from the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, obtaining diplomas: painter from Adam Marczynski and graphic artist from Ludwik Gardowski. Kowalski later became a member of the Krakow Group, Zaglebie and Arkat groups. He was an active participant in the anti-communist opposition. His work includes easel, wall painting, mosaic, drawing and graphic art. In his painting and graphic art, since the end of the 1950s, organic, free forms of stains with a characteristic color tone (browns and yellows as well as olive green and gray) intertwine, composed with a consistent order of geometry. The painter's intuitive decisions are complemented with a clear rational element. With time, he began to introduce geometric or figural motifs into his compositions.
