William Page Atkinson Wells was born in Glasgow, in 1871.  After studying at the Slade, he moved to Australia for five years.

Wells then returned to Europe, and worked in France in the Barbizon tradition.  After a short stay in Glasgow, he settled in Preston, Lancashire for seven years.  Finally he settled in Appeldore, Devon.
