Samuel Hershey

Samuel Franklin Hershey (1904 - 1987) was active/lived in Massachusetts, Indiana.  Samuel Hershey is known for Modernist landscape and marine painting, architecture, teaching.

Samuel F. Hershey studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts*, Boston Museum School of Art, and with New Haven Paint & Clay Club* members Aldro Hibbard and William Lester Stevens. 

He exhibited his paintings nationally during the 1920's and 1930s before he began his teaching career.  At Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, he taught from 1937 to 1942; at the Rhode Island School of Design, from 1946 to 1969; and at the University of California (Berkeley) until his retirement in 1971.

A New Haven Paint & Clay Club member from 1933 to 1949, Samuel Hershey exhibited paintings of still life, landscape and figure studies.  He was awarded the John I.H. Downes Landscape Prize for his work, October Afternoon in 1932.
