Born at Findrack, Aberdeen, Scotland on 25 July 1848 and baptised at Lumphanan, Aberdeen on 12 September the same year, son of Dr. Robert Winchester Fraser (1819-1892), an army surgeon, and his wife Mary Ann née Anderson (1820-1898).  Dr. Robert Winchester Fraser settled at Bedford in 1861 and had six other sons and two daughters, many of whom took up painting. 

Other brothers of this painter who are known artists are Francis Arthur Anderson Fraser (1846-1924); Garden William Fraser (1856-1921) (who signed paintings as W.F. Garden); George Gordon Fraser (1859-1895); Arthur Anderson Fraser (1861-1924) and Gilbert Baird Fraser (1865-1947).  His son was another artist named Robert James Winchester Fraser (1872-1930 q.v.) (who signed himself 'Robert Winter').
