Philippe was a painter and sculpture He attended high school at Collège Stanislas , then entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere (in the workshop of Emile Othon Friesz). At the age of 23 he went to Tahiti following in the footsteps of Gauguin, along with his friend from the Collège Stanislas, the painter Philippe Lejeune who became the founder of the School of Etampes. Cara Costea obtained a state scholarship in 1955. His works are held in many institutions such as The Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the National Library of France.
