An eminent Canadian war artist, influential art educator, painter, printmaker, muralist and draftsman, Lawren Phillips Harris was born in Toronto, Ontario and died in Ottawa, Ontario, where he had lived since the late 1970s. Most comprehensive Canadian art history books and virtually all comprehensive Canadian war art books (written since World War II) discuss Harris's work. His almost surrealistic paintings of tank warfare, such as Battleground before Ortona (CWM) and Tank Advance, Italy (CWM), are frequently reproduced or mentioned as illustrations of war art. After World War II, as an art school administrator and professor, he was one of the first to introduce and advance the study of abstract art in Canada.
