Ladislaus Bakalowicz

Ladislaus Bakalowicz (1833 - 1904) was active/lived in Poland, United States, France.  Ladislaus Bakalowicz is known for Aristrocratic portrait, figure, genre and landscape painting.

A classic style Polish school painter, who spent much of his career in France, Laldislaus Bakalowicz studied at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts from 1849 to 1854.  He relocated to France in 1863, settling in Paris where he became a French citizen.

Bakalowicz married actress Wiktoryna Szymanowska and had a son, Stefan, who also became a painter well known in Russian Empire.  In 1877, he submitted artwork to the annual exhibition of the Pennsylvania Academy.

 He specialised in so-called 'historical genre' paintings, which took inspiration from sixteenth and seventeenth century French history, especially the court of Henry III and his successor, Henry IV. These pictures were carefully devised to offer a 'snapshot' of history and capture 'the spirit of the times' with focus on the realistic rendering of period costume and interior.
