Gottfried Kumpf was born in 1930.  Gottfried Kumpf initially studied medicine before devoting himself to painting.  Kumpf has been working as a freelance painter since 1956.  He drew inspiration for his works from his numerous travels around the world, predominantly on his bicycle.  By 1964, he was already successfully exhibiting his works. 

Kumpf also works as an illustrator, interior decorator and even an actor.  The figure of the so-called 'Asozialer' (antisocial man) or 'Wanderer am Rande der Welt' (hiker on the edge of the world) is found in almost all his artworks and has become his signature feature.  His works are found in many public and private collections.
