The artistic tradition already existed in Edward Wilkins Waite's family. His grandfather, William Watkins Waite, was a miniaturist, and his father, a Congregationalist minister, did a bit of amateur watercolour painting. He was born in Letterhead, in the Surrey Hills in 1854.

He traveled to Canada in the 1870's after his primary education, where he worked as a lumberjack for two years sketching his journey. When he returned he started to paint more academically, submitting two paintings to the RA in 1878. He ended up showing forty-six pieces at the Royal Academy, and he was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1893.
