Born in 1931, Choo Keng Kwang is one of Singapore’s key pioneer artists, renowned for his oil paintings of market street scenes, elegant renderings of symbolic animals, as well as detailed woodcut prints of common local subjects.  Much like his artistic contemporaries, Choo sought to merge Eastern and Western influences and techniques in his works.

Choo has likened the peaceful ambiance of his works to his own warm and convivial temperament, making his works ideal commissions by governments and royalty, and as thoughtful gifts to foreign dignitaries.  Taking his influence from Chinese woodcut print techniques, Choo uses strong black outlines to delineate the boats, yet avoids an overly graphic effect by balancing clarity and precision of the scene’s representation with visible brushstrokes of thickly laid paint – much like the Western Impressionists who valued the accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities.  Choo’s Fishing Village offers a glimpse into the rus   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 1109 characters.]  Artist bio
