Alexander Rodchenko was born in St. Petersburg, Russia on November 23, 1891. In the turbulent years after the Russian Revolution, Rodchenko devoted his energies to painting, industrial and graphic design. He shared a studio in Moscow with his wife, artist Varvara Stepanova. Their apartment was large by Moscow standards, having two bedrooms and a parlor in addition to the studio; nothing has changed significantly since 1935. It is the home of three generations of the Rodchenko family and the studio is also a shrine to Alexander and Varvara Stepanova Rodchenko, their life and work.

The couple moved to the apartment in 1922. Rodchenko was then the leader of the
Constructivist Group within Inkhuk, the Institute of Artistic Culture founded in 1920 with help from Kandinsky. Determined to free art from its bourgeois associations, he even abandoned the Constructivist technique in painting and sculpture for which he is still best known.
