Adi Davierwalla

Adi Davierwalla (1922 - 1975) is known for Sculpture.

Born in 1922, Adi Davierwalla graduated from the Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute (now known as the Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute) in Mumbai (then Bombay), having studied pharmaceutical engineering. After his first 1956 solo exhibition at the Jehangir Art Gallery, Davierwalla gave up his position at the Continental Drug Company and began working as a full-time sculptor; a radical decision at a time when most Indian artists were painters. In 1968, Davierwalla was a recipient of the J.D. Rockefeller Fellowship; the only Indian sculptor in a group of painter grantees. Self-taught, Davierwalla was inspired by ancient Indian sculpture, and turned to wood, a traditional material of India, at the beginning of his career. However, he believed that ‘traditional [Indian] sculpture is complete in itself.
