Martin Mackeown was a painter of idealized rural scenes and, contrastingly, realistic interpretations of interior life.  Born in 1931 in Ireland, Mackeown studied at Belfast College of Art.  Following this he won a scholarship to the Edinburgh College of Art.  There Mackeown was granted a scholarship that allowed him to travel through Europe painting.  On his return he debuted at the Arts Council Galleries at Belfast in 1952 with Basil Blackshaw.  Mackeown traveled for many more years and then returned to painting in the 1980s, exhibiting in London and Belfast.
