Born in Kerala in 1960, Jyothi Basu studied at the College of Fine Arts in Trivandrum and the Faculty of Fine Arts, MS University, Baroda.  He was a founding member of the Indian Radical Painters and Sculptors Association, with artists like K.P. Krishnakumar and T.K. Hareendran.

Most recently, in April and May of 2006 his works were featured in a solo exhibition at Thomas Erben Gallery in New York entitled Landscapes toward a Supreme Fiction.  He had another solo show at the Fine Art Resource at Artists' Center in Mumbai in 2003.  Recent participations include The Artist Lives and Works, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, 2005, and A Piece of the Wall, Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke, Mumbai, 2006.Christie's Mumbai
