Born and raised in North Platte, Nebraska, Deborah Murphy attended Kearney State College, now the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where she received a B.A. in art. She has worked as a professional artist since 1973.

Murphy's exhibition history includes the Mid-America Arts Alliance/National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Award in Painting and Works on Paper and the Nebraska Arts Council Distinguished Achievement Fellowship Grant.
