Athanasios Zacharias (b. May 1, 1927)
A.K.A. “Athos Zacharias,” “Arthur Zacharias”

Painter.  Born in Marlborough, Massachusetts, he grew up in nearby Fall River.  A noted abstract artist who worked early in his career as the studio assistant to a number of important American painters, including Willem de Kooning (1904 – 1997) and Lee Krasner (1908 – 1984).

As World War II came to a close, Zacharias enlisted in the military late in 1945 at Fort Banks, located in Boston.  Following his military service and using the GI Bill, he studied first at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts in 1952.  He spent the following summer at the Art Students League summer school, located in Woodstock, New York.  He then went on to receive his Master’s degree in Fine Art   ...  [Displaying 1000 of 11748 characters.]  Artist bio
