A graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Anthony Angarola became an active painter and art instructor. He was a first-generation Italian immigrant, and much of his work focused on his compassion for persons struggling to adopt to a foreign culture.

In 1927, he became the Director of the Department of Painting and Drawing and was influenced in regional themes by his associate Thomas Hart Benton. However, he maintained a modernist style and focused on ethnic groups rather than certain parts of the country.
