Max Merker was born in 1861.  He was a painter and graphic artist, active in Weimar.

From 1881-89, he studied at the Weimar art school under Alexander Struys and Woldemar Friedrich.  From 1886-89, he was a master student of Theodor Hagen.  He went on study trips to Italy (including Rome, Capri and Sicily). 

Merker was a member of the General German Kunstgenossenschaft, free association Weimarischer artist, and the Thuringian exhibitors association of artists.
