Bertram Schmiterlöw is known to many as one of Sweden's foremost portrait painters during the second half of the 20th century, but his artistry far exceeded that and was characterized by an exciting artist life. His captivating depictions are characterized by a figurative, expressive and sweetly colored painting where light and surfaces build the environments. As the son of a Swedish officer and a French-born Norwegian diplomat daughter, Bertram Schmiterlöw's upbringing and life came to be shared between residents in different countries. The inspiration for most of the works in Schmiterlöw's art was taken from the years in San Salvador de Jujuy, one of Argentina's oldest cities located in the country's northwestern part, where Bertram together with his mother and younger brother moved in the mid-1940s.
