His paintings depict the Indiana landscape or the Maine coast, where he makes frequent painting excursions. His work also includes varied subject matter including smaller cityscapes and still-life paintings.

Smith is a lifelong Indiana resident. After graduating from college he worked in human resources until he decided to pursue his interest in painting. While basically self-taught as an artist, he was greatly assisted and influenced by such people as Indiana artists Louise Hansen, Floyd Hopper, and Omer Seamon.

Although he has worked with traditional transparent watercolor for over twenty- five years, he now divides his time between watercolor and acrylic painting. While he still enjoys working with traditional watercolor as much as ever, he feels the acrylics can be more versatile and expressive for some painting subjects.
