Vartan Mahokian

Vartan (Wartan) Mahokian (1869 - 1937) was active/lived in Armenia, France, United States, Turkey.  Vartan Mahokian is known for Marine, landscape, genre painting.

The artist, who is especially known for his seascapes, was born in Trabzon and studied at the Berlin Academy from 1891 onwards, whereby he was a pupil of Eugen Bracht and Hans Gude.  After his studies, he traveled to the Crimea and met the artist Ivan Aivazovsky.  In 1895, Makhokian returned to Trabzon and witnessed the Hamidian massacres.  He fled to Europe and began exhibiting his works there, further exhibitions were organized in Egypt.  In 1914, Makhokian settled in Nice, having temporarily lived in Denmark, Italy and Trabzon.  In 1921, 1922 and 1927 he participated in the Salon de Paris.  His works are now, for example, owned by the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nice, by the Musée Arménien de France and at the National Gallery of Armenia.
