Minoru Niizuma (1930-1998)

He was a Japanese abstract sculptor and worked in marble, granite, and volcanic rock as his artistic medium.  Niizuma was captivated by the inherent beauty of stone and wished to uncover its hidden qualities.  He carved the stone to make shapes that vary from sleekly geometric to roughly organic influenced by oriental tradition and the western contemporary art.  Niizuma was inspired by knowledge of modern Western sculpture that he obtained when he moved to the United States in 1959.  He created a substantial volume of works and the Castle of the Eye series contains the most significant and revered works by Niizuma. They are resonant with forms of Japanese folk art and reflect both Asian and Western influence.
