Isabel Bacheler graduated from Converse Art School in Norwich, Connecticut. Along with her husband, Monroe William Smith, she helped found American Youth Hostels in 1934 and founded Camp Fellowship in Bryson City, North Carolina.

Bacheler was most known for painting watercolors to illustrate her writings and poems.
