Clara Stephens

Clara Jane Stephens (1877 - 1952) was active/lived in Oregon, California.  Clara Stephens is known for Town-landscape, missions, genre.

Painter. Born near Lands End, England on May 16, 1877. Stephens grew up in Portland, OR and first studied there in the 1890s with Eva Woolfolk and with Frank V. DuMond who was there for a brief visit. She further studied at the ASL of NYC under Kenyon Cox and Wm M. Chase and in France and Italy. She taught at the Oregon College of Arts & Crafts, Portland Academy (1905-14) and Portland Museum Art School (1917-38). She was in San Francisco during the PPIE where she served on the Advisory Committee for the West. During the 1920s her paintings received international acclaim. While living in Portland she painted and exhibited in the San Francisco Bay area into the 1930s. A spinster, she died in Portland on May 1, 1952. Working in oil and watercolor, she produced portraits, landscapes, and still lifes a la Wm M. Chase. Member: AAPL; Oregon Society of Artists.
