Christian Maxwell (1909-1980)

The sister of the famous writer Gavin Maxwell, she was also a lifelong communist who was very active in solidarity work for refugees from Franco's Spain and she also played a key role in helping Jews and other refugees to get out of Austria following the "Anschluss" in 1934 and Czechoslovakia following the Nazi invasion in 1938.
 
Maxwell was a close friend of the painter Janet Cree (b.1910) as mentioned in Janet Cree's husband's memoirs titled Muck, Silk and Socialism.
