William Dunlap

William Dunlap (1766 - 1839) was active/lived in New Jersey, New York / England.  William Dunlap is known for Portrait and religious theme painting, miniatures, writing.

Born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, William Dunlap became a well-known painter in early 19th-century America and also was a highly regarded writer of American history. In addition to these accomplishment, he, along with John Trumbull, is credited as discovering and encouraging the talent of Thomas Cole, founder of the Hudson River School of Painting*.

Dunlap lost an eye in a childhood accident, but in spite of this handicap, was by age 17, a successful portrait artist. His subjects included George Washington. In 1784, when he was age 18, he went to London, where he studied for three years at the Royal Academy of Arts* with Benjamin West, an American who had become a leading painter in classical* style in England.

Returning to America in 1787, Dunlap did not earn enough money with portraits, so he switched to theater management and play writing, becoming America's first professional playwright.
