William Carson

William A. Carson (1867 - 1949) was active/lived in California, Illinois.  William Carson is known for Landscape and coastal painting.

William was the son of Dr. James, and Sarah Branigar Carson, born 06/06/1867, in Pennsylvania.  Much of his early childhood was spent in Colorado playing with the Indians, whom he loved and later used as subjects in his paintings.  He was a natural self taught talent and pursued painting most of his adult life with no formal training as an artist.

In 1879 the family moved to Maquoketa Iowa, where eventually he maintained a studio, and built a strong local following for his accomplished paintings. He was an extremely prolific and driven artist, known for his romantic (mid) western landscapes, with and without Native American subjects. He was also a fine painter of the allegory, the religious, scenes of historical antiquity, seascapes, and animals, (especially African).  During WW1 he spent time south of Chicago training Indians in sharp shooting, and also invented a part used on guns.
