Willem Hussem

Willem Hussem (1900 - 1974) was active/lived in Netherlands.  Willem Hussem is known for Painting and sculpture.

After a stay in Paris, Hussem returned to The Hague in 1936 where he remained afterwards. In this city he frequented the café ‘De Posthoorn’ where he met fellow painters but also several poets who encouraged hem to write poetry himself. Besides the Posthoorn group, Hussem was part of art movements such as ‘Fugare’ and ‘Liga Nieuw Beelden’. At that time, his oeuvre is situated within the art movement of the ‘New Hague School’. In the Netherlands, Hussem is considered a prominent figure in the cultural avant-garde from 1936-1974, but the decade of the 1960's were the most successful and artistically intersting within his oeuvre. 'Peinture VIII', dated 1960, is a rare artwork from this fascinating time. The painting is the result of a constant pursuit of simplicity and purity. Although his art is abstract, reality plays an important role in his artistic process. Through geometric shapes, he creates his own new reality.
