Walter Swennen is certainly among the most important artists of his generation in the Belgian artistic landscape. Unclassifiable, his art is a sort of short circuit between popular culture and great painting, with an iconoclastic tone and caustic humor. 

A poet at heart, language is a founding element of his practice. Whether in Flemish, French, German or English, the words populate his compositions, without ever providing them with any meaning, a key to understanding. Because delivering a message is not the artist's intentions. He does not expect the viewer to understand a work but that it arouses emotions in him, that it encourages him to use his imagination. 

The primary purpose of painting is the act of painting itself. He explores all the possibilities, all the nooks and crannies: shape, texture, pattern, color...
