STELL, THOMAS MATTHEW, JR. (1898-1981). Thomas M. Stell, Jr., painter, teacher, and member of the Dallas Nine group of regionalist artists, was born on November 7, 1898, in Cuero, Texas, one of four children born to Thomas M. and Irene Galle Stell. He showed an interest in drawing at an early age, designing streamlined automobiles with his friend E. M. (Buck) Schiwetz, who also became an artist in later years.

Stell was educated in Cuero public schools and was remembered as a talented young artist by one of his teachers, Walter Prescott Webb. Following his graduation from high school in 1914 Stell worked various draftsman jobs in Hollywood, Dallas, Chicago, and New York; he also spent time in Nebraska.
