Thomas Buttersworth

Thomas Buttersworth (1768 - 1842) was active/lived in United Kingdom, England.  Thomas Buttersworth is known for Marine painting, often naval battle scenes.

From England where he spent most of his painting career, Thomas Buttersworth was known for his marine watercolor and oil paintings and charcoal drawings, especially battle scenes. He was a mariner himself, which meant that many of his depictions were based on first-hand observations.  Examples include Inshore Squadron off Cadiz (1797), which is in the National Maritime Museum in London.

In 1795, Buttersworth was assigned to the ship Enterprise in London, and several years later was on the Caroline during the French wars. However, by 1800, he was land bound, having become an invalid during sea duty in Minorca. He assumed the appointment of Marine Painter for the East India Company, which led him to a new phase of his painting career---ship portraits.
