Thomas Bush Hardy

Thomas Bush Hardy (1842 - 1897) was active/lived in United Kingdom, England, France.  Thomas Hardy is known for Sailing vessels, fishing scenes and seascape painting.

Thomas Bush Hardy was born in Sheffield, England in 1842 to Thomas and Amelia Hardy, and was apprenticed in the optical trade to his maternal grandfather.  In 1861, he had a falling out with his fiancee, and worked his way to America where he enlisted in the North American Federal Army.  However, having been wounded in the Civil War, he returned to Sheffield and married his fiancee, Mary Ann Lovne.  He was employed by the Sheffield Silver Assay Office, and by 1868 had three children.  Around this time he took up watercolor painting.

In 1870, he moved with his family to London, and continued to paint while working at Somerset House for the Inland Revenue until he could afford to support his family with his marine paintings. By 1873, he and his wife had three more children, and in 1877, the family moved to France.  In 1886, his wife died, having given birth to eight children in sixteen years.
