Richard Saltonstall Greenough

Richard Saltonstall Greenough (1819 - 1904) was active/lived in Massachusetts / Italy.  Richard Greenough is known for Sculptor-portrait statue.

Richard Saltonstall Greenough, born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1819, was a noted sculptor of the Victorian era. Educated there at the Latin School, Greenough decided, at seventeen, to follow his brother in a career in sculpture.

In 1837, he left for Italy, where Horatio Greenough (brother) had already established a reputation. Thereafter he divided his time between Europe and America, but spent most of his studio life in Rome. In Florence, like so many young artists before him, he drew from the antique and learned his craft. Ill health forced him home, however, and he established himself in Boston in 1839. It was not until 1844, with a plaster bust of William H. Prescott, that Greenough began to attract critical notice for his portrait busts and "fancy pieces."
