Mekertich Hovhannesi Givanian

Mekertich Hovhannesi Givanian (1848 - 1906) was active/lived in Turkey, Russian Federation.  Mekertich Givanian is known for Luminous, nocturnal waterscene painting.

Born in Constantinople to Armenian parents in 1848, Mekertich Givanian studied alongside Abraham Sakayan at Istanbul's Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts in the 1860s. In 1874, he met Ivan Aivazovsky, whose work inspired him to explore marine subjects. From 1876 to 1879, he stayed in Italy and, on his return to Asia Minor, married an Italian woman. In 1894, he settled in Odessa, Ukraine, and seven years later spent four years in St. Petersburg. Givanian died in Istanbul in 1906.
