Margaret Sarah Carpenter was born in Salisbury, in 1793. Margaret moved to London in 1814, and soon established herself as a leading and fashionable portrait painter. Margaret Carpenter's pictures were greatly influenced by the works of Sir Thomas Lawrence, suggesting that she may have been one of this pupils. Margaret Sarah Carpenter died in 1872.
