Mannumi Shaqu

Mannumi Shaqu (1917 - 2000) was active/lived in Nunavut / Canada.  Mannumi Shaqu is known for Mixed-media Inuit sculpture and carving, portraits, legends, mammals and birds.

Mannumi Shaqu (1917 - 2000)

A prominent early modern Inuit sculptor and carver, Mannumi Shaqu was born near Cape Dorset (Baffin Island), Nunavut, Canada and lived in Nunavut his whole life (he also lived in Coral Harbour (Southampton Island) and Frobisher Bay (Baffin Island), both in Nunavut). His carvings have been included in a number of landmark exhibitions and his works are in several Canadian museum collections. His sculpture Mother and Child was given to Princess (now Queen) Elizabeth on the occasion of her November 1951 visit to Canada. It was one of the first times a work of Inuit art was presented as an official gift by Canada. (1)(2)

Shaqu's mediums included stone, marine ivory, bone, antler, and mixed mediums. His subjects included portrait heads, figures, family groups, legends, mythology, and arctic mammals and birds. His styles were Realism* and Inuit Art*. AskART has many excellent illustrations of his oeuvre.
