Longworth Nicholas Powers

Longworth Nicholas Powers (1835 - 1904) was active/lived in Ohio / Italy.  Longworth Powers is known for Sculptor-portrait bust, photographer.

A sculptor and photographer who lived much of his life in Italy, Longworth Powers was born in Cincinnati and studied with his father, Hiram Powers (1805-1873) a famous Neo-Classical sculptor.

Longworth Powers was named for Cincinnati lawyer Nicholas Longworth, who became the patron of Hiram Powers. Because of Longworth, Powers spent time in Washington DC and got many portrait commissions of prominent political figures including Andrew Jackson and also got a formal contract from the United States government of $25,000.00 for ornamentation of the Capitol Building.

The Powers family had emigrated from Ohio to Italy in 1837 when Longworth Powers was two years old and settled in Florence where they became major figures in a colony of American sculptors that included Thomas Ball, Thomas Crawford, Daniel Chester French and William Couper. These sculptors availed themselves of the nearby Carrara Marble, known for the purity of its whiteness.
