Artist Biography & Facts
Joseph Ord

Joseph Biays Ord (1805 - 1865) was active/lived in Pennsylvania.  Joseph Ord is known for Still life, some portrait and religious painting.

A still life painter from Philadelphia, Joseph Ord is credited as being a key figure in making still life a sought-after subject by American artists and bridging the more controlled manner of the Peales and the lush renderings of Severin Roesen and John Francis.

Ord's still life paintings were unique in that the still life was the sole focus of the painting rather than an accessory to other subjects. His paintings tend to be complex with many objects at opposing angles to each other and with much contrast of light and dark.

Ord began his career as a figure and portrait painter, but his still lifes, which he began around 1838, became so sought after that he rarely returned to his former subjects.

He was much influenced by the Peales with the incorporation of the subtle effects of contrasting light and dark and also by the Dutch masters of the 17th century.   ...  [Displaying 889 of 3363 characters.]  Artist bio
