John Callcot Horsley (1817-1803) was born in Brompton in today’s London.  John Horsley attended the Sass's Academy and registered for the Royal Academy of Arts in 1831.  He was awarded a gold medal in the antiquity section. 

Since 1837 he exhibited his paintings at the institution.  In 1864, he was admitted as a member of the Royal Academy, adding the suffix ‘RA’ to his name.
