Harriet Anderson Stubbs Murphy

Harriet Anderson Stubbs Murphy (1853 - 1935) was active/lived in United States.  Harriet Murphy is known for Portrait painting.

Mrs. Harriet Anderson Stubbs Murphy, who painted more than 1,000 portraits, many of famous men, including Presidents William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, passed away at the age of 84.

Mrs. Murphy was the widow of William D. Murphy, also an artist.  Because she could do business better through him, her portraits were signed W. D. Murphy.  Mr. Murphy died about five years prior to his wife.

Mrs. W. D. Murphy was self taught and had been painting since she was twelve years old.

Born in Liverpool, England, she came to New York from Montreal and was married in 1886.  When Mr. Murphy discovered that his wife's work was better than his own, he abandoned his own art work and became her business agent.
