Murman/n, Eugene Otto Walter (1874-1962) (San Fernando Valley)

Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Murman developed an early interest in natural history and nature photography but earned his living as a banker. Immigrating to the U. S. in 1905 he couldn’t find a banking position, so he trained for a year in Germany as a commercial artist and then settled in Los Angeles in 1906 where he became a furniture designer for California Furniture Company, which became W & J Sloane.

Retiring, after 34 years, he began traveling California making preliminary sketches, color notes, and photographs of plants and collecting dried specimens from which he produced his final paintings at his home studio (1941-1961). Out of the 495 watercolors, one depicts loco weed and the other bush lupine, both from Pismo Beach, 1951.
